Throughout US history, racism has been deeply ingrained in various aspects of health equity access, delivery, and responses to epidemics and disasters. Created by Social Art and Culture, Artivists for Health [AFH] Initiatives aims to improve public health through the collaborative efforts of Artivism and Science. In the Summer of 2025, Artivists for Health will select five artivists across the US to address public health issues related to environmental and health diseases that plague our communities. By addressing these crucial health problems affecting communities of color, Artivists will work in teams with science and medical experts to design campaigns and initiatives that artistically propose present or future solutions where policy and community intersect. Artivists for Health's artistic footprint is deep, broad, and diverse, engaging communities of color using art as a vehicle for change.
Social Art and Culture’s Artivists for Health initiatives teaser launch took place at DMV Made: A Culture and Wellness Festival on July 27, 2024, from 1 pm - 5 pm in the Health Pavilion on The National Mall. We hosted a visual storytelling exercise led by a DC graphic designer and illustrator, Jim Nuttle, in collaboration with DC Water Lead Free DC and NOAA One Health. This exercise addressed facts, myths, and health impacts of lead and urban heat on our communities with the community.
